Love

“But I say to you,
love your enemies and
pray for those who persecute you,
so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven;
for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good,
and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
“For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?
Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Matthew 5:44-46

Dear Heavenly Father,

It is so easy for me to love a newborn baby, someone who is kind,  family members who are dear to me. It is easy for me and for most people. But, You have called me to love more than that.

You have called me to love like You love.

You have called me to do that which is not in my human nature

to love my enemies.

Thank You for loving me when I was still a sinner. Help me today to show that same love to another. If You send rain on the just and the unjust, should I not also be kind to those who deserve it (in my estimation) and those who do not?

Father, forgive my arrogance

in neglecting to love and pray for those who are against me.

Forgive my tendency to do nice things

for those who I think might do something nice in return.

I am no longer of this world. You have called me to

  •      behave worthy of my heavenly citizenship,
  •      to behave as Christ – with love and compassion.

Lord, make me mindful of that today.

Give me opportunity to love as Jesus loved,

to serve as Jesus served and

to lift to Your throne of grace those who so desperately need to know You.

I pray in Jesus’ most holy and precious name, my example of love,

Amen.
