“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows:
when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph,
before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her,
planned to send her away secretly.
But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife;
for  the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus,
for  He will save His people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:18-21
You shall call his name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” His very name speaks to Who He was, Who He is, and what He came to do.
The word “Jesus” means – “Jehovah is salvation.” The Hebrew word in the Old Testament, Yĕhowshuwa`, we transliterate as “Joshua.” It is a combination of two words,  Yĕhovah, the proper name of the one true God, and yasha`, which means to save, deliver, preserve, and give victory. We commonly shorten the meaning of His name to the same description the angel used, He will save His people from their sins, or God saves.
This “save” is the same word used in Matthew 8:25,26 when men in a sinking boat thought they were about to die. “And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” In the next verse Jesus “got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm.”
It was also used in Matthew 9:21,22 about a woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years. She heard of Him and believed. “for she was saying to herself, “If I only touch His garment, I will get well.” Her faith was rewarded in the next verse. “Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Daughter, take courage; your faith has made you well.” At once the woman was made well.

In Luke 8:36 “Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well.

Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Acts 16:31 “They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.

Romans 5:9, 10 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

Romans 10:9 “if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

When we are in crisis, we can call on His name for calm. When we are hurting, reach out to Him for healing. When demons inhabit, He can evict them with His word. When we are lost, we can call to Him and He will find us.

Through His name, we are saved from the destruction we deserve because of our sin. No other name, no other means, Jesus alone. Jesus. How precious the name. How precious the gift.

Thank you Father.

When the Word became flesh and lived among us, You told us to call His name “Jesus, because He came to save.” May we ever be careful and reverent with that name, understanding the vast power within it. We bow before You in awe of all You have done for us, and thank You once again for this precious gift, Jesus.
