Eat, Be Filled, Return

“At mealtime Boaz said to her,
“Come here, that you may eat of the bread
and dip your piece of bread in the vinegar.”
So she sat beside the reapers;
and he served her roasted grain,
and she ate
and was satisfied
and had some left.
When she rose to glean, Boaz commanded his servants, saying,
“Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not insult her.
“Also you shall purposely pull out for her some grain from the bundles
and leave it that she may glean,
and do not rebuke her.”

Ruth 2:14-16

Dear Father,

You led them out of slavery in Egypt, into the wilderness where they thought hunger would defeat them. You provided manna and quail to satisfy their need to eat, their hunger. They were filled with that which You provided in the middle of the wilderness. When Ruth had no means to provide for herself and Naomi, Boaz became a picture of You and provided for her needs, beginning with her immediate need to eat.

Father, thank You for providing the bread of life that satisfies my hungry soul! When You became flesh and gave that very flesh for my sake, You satisfied once for all the greatest need of my soul, with leftovers remaining that I simply can not consume at one sitting.

Your sacrifice completely satisfies the overwhelming sin debt I owed! Sin would have continued to be my master and would have defeated me, without You.

Your sacrifice gave me entrance into the kingdom.

With You as the host, the table is filled with all things that satisfy my soul. My heart remains alive and full with You. All who come to Your table are filled, satisfied and no one leaves Your table empty.

When Ruth finished and was satisfied, she went back to work. Father,

  • give me the direction I need to honor You in my work.
  • Give me the strength and wisdom to accomplish Your will for me today
  • with full expectation of victory over all those things that would try to defeat me.

Thank You for the example of Ruth and Boaz who sought You at every turn. May I take on the generosity and faithfulness of Boaz, and the commitment of Ruth. They lived their lives in faithfulness to You and became the parents of a son, Obed, who was the father of Jesse, the father of David. What a wonderful legacy You created from this faithful, obedient, submissive woman!

I pray in Jesus’ name and for His sake,
