A Mother’s Journey

by Melissa Heiland

Welcome, Melissa!

Thank you for sharing about your book, A Mother’s Journey. What kind of journey is the book about?

This special little book has forty chapters to correspond with each week of your pregnancy, offering comfort and spiritual guidance to those facing challenges. Each week’s reading includes Scripture verses and a journal prompt, as well as information about your baby’s development at various stages to help you get to know the little one growing inside you.

A Mother’s Journey is a great resource to help you connect deeper with your baby, yourself, and your heavenly Father. Whether you’re walking the journey of pregnancy with or without the support of a partner, remember that there is a compassionate God who is with you and who cares for you.

That’s a tremendous reminder. What prompted you to write it?

I had written A Mother’s Comfort for baby’s first year, and many people asked me to write a devotional for pregnant moms who were experiencing unplanned pregnancies.

Is there a message you want to convey?

I want the reader to know that God has a plan for her and for her baby.

That should bring great comfort and meaning to mothers. How is it designed to be used?

This book is for pregnant women. It is one devotional a week for the 40 weeks of pregnancy.

Sounds like a special book.

I loved writing this book because I have counseled so many women in unplanned pregnancies and I wanted them to have Scriptures that are specific to the issues that are dealt with during unplanned pregnancy. I was reminded again how God’s Word has the answers to every situation.

4 WEEKS: A pregnancy test taken at this point can measure hCG, the pregnancy hormone in the mother’s urine, and tell her if she is pregnant. By now, the embryo is completely attached to the lining of the uterus and draws nourishment from its mother.

Streams in the Desert

Read Isaiah 43:18-21

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” (v. 19)

You just received news that will change your life. You are pregnant. You may be happy or sad or confused. You are probably scared. You have so many questions and too few answers. This may be a surprise to you, but one thing is certain. This is not a surprise to God. God knows this baby, and he knows you. He knows all of your questions, and he know all of the answers. He has a plan for you, and he is doing a new thing in your body even now. Although the road ahead of you may look difficult or even impossible, that’s not true. God is doing something new and different in your life, and he will make a way in the desert for you. Nothing Is impossible for God. This is why he says he will make streams in the wasteland. Take a deep breath and listen to his voice as he tells you that he is doing something new and good for you. He will make a way for you. He loves you.

Tell us about the other book that you wrote before this one, A Mother’s Comfort.

I wanted a devotional for new moms that weren’t necessarily living the dream. It seemed like all the devotionals for new moms were written for mothers that had planned their pregnancies and had husbands and other things in place that made life easier.

Very true. It sounds like you filled a need.

I wanted the moms who were in more difficult circumstances to have something written for them. I want my readers to know that God has a plan for them and for their babies. I want them to know that the Bible was written for them and that it applies to their lives.

Is this one also for pregnancy?

A Mother’s Comfort is written for new moms. It is a devotional for a baby’s first year. It serves as both a devotional and a keepsake.

I’m sure there were special moments for you while writing these.

The greatest thing about writing this for me was imagining that I was sitting across from her as I wrote it. I loved seeing how many Scriptures apply directly to mothering.

A very personal approach.

   WEEK 2

A Gift from God

Read 1 Samuel 1

“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked

of him. So now I give him to the Lord.” (vv. 27-28)

Hannah was infertile. Although her husband loved her with all his heart, she cried often and was brokenhearted. She begged God to giver her a son, she would give the child back to him. God answered her heartfelt cries and gave her a son, whom she named Samuel, which means “heard of God”. And Hannah kept her promise. As soon as Samuel was weaned, she brought him to the temple to learn to serve God. Samuel grew up to be a mighty man of God.

Maybe, like Hannah, you waited many years for the birth of your child. Or maybe the birth of your baby was not at all expected or wanted. Either way, your child is a gift from God, and God has great plans for your baby’s life. The Lord has given you this precious gift, and now you must make a choice to give your child back to God. Raise your child to love and serve God all of his life. Trust God to answer your prayer and his.

Father, thank you for giving me this beautiful baby. Help me to raise him to serve and obey you. Help me to give him back to you. Amen.

4 Thoughts on “A Mother’s Journey and A Mother’s Comfort by Melissa Heiland”

  • I’m so happy Melissa wrote this book. It will bless so many moms and the many concerns that cross their protective hearts as they carry their child. Giving your child back to God resonated with me in our example from Week 2. I wrote about how I offered my children back to God in the first day or two (it’s all a blur those first few days) after they were born in my memoir, God’s Patient Pursuit of My Soul. I thanked Him for receiving them as a gift from Him and immediately acknowledged them as His and that I’d take care of them for as long as He allowed me to do so. It brought me peace, just as I’m sure your book, Melissa, will do for many. Thanks, Lisa, for bringing Melissa Heiland to our attention.

    • It will no doubt be a great blessing! Thank you, Chris, for taking the time to leave your words of encouragement!
